Research Report 3

In order to widely disseminate the findings from the heCareZA research reports using social media listening tools, each report will be shared along with a series of designs that summarise insights into the online conversation. We aim to support the work of other organisations and digital activists by making the insights easily accessible.

These designs are made so that you can read them and share with others that you think would be interested, as well as use them as conversation starters on your social media.

This social media analytics report focused on xenophobic conversations in South Africa covering the period 01 March 2023 – 31 March 2023. The report found that the dominance of the Economic Freedom Fighter’s national shutdown protest within the conversation speaks to the extent to which the conversation about immigrants in South Africa is increasingly being politicised. In light of the upcoming national elections in 2024, there is great potential for and concern that the targeting of immigrants as a political tactic will be mobilised to garner support from dissatisfied South Africans whose everyday reality includes increasing cost of living, high unemployment (especially among the youth), extreme inequality, deepening poverty, rampant crime, load shedding and severe lack of basic service provisions
